Happy Tails! – Ozzie

January 29th, 2012

Ozzie as a pup going to his rescue, April 2011

Ozzie is a Cocker Spaniel that FLASh helped recently. He was just a pup, at Lafayette Animal Control Center, and had an injured hip. FLASh helped get him to rescue and helped with vet expenses for his bum hip. This is the rescue’s email update that she sent us a couple days ago on Sunday Jan. 31st

“Hey guys I thought you might like to see how big Ozzie has gotten. God he is BEAUTIFUL!!! There is not even a slight limp either. They have had him checked several times over the past year and he has healed perfectly. His best friend is a huge Pitbull. So cute.”

Santa Paws Success

December 16th, 2011

Despite the chilly weather this past weekend, Santa Paws was a great success!  The Santa Paws event was held this past Sunday, Dec. 10th, from 10 am to 2 pm. We raised about $300 after expenses. Woohoo!  Overall the day was fun, albeit a bit chilly!  We had a steady stream of customers, lots of yummy cookies and hot chocolate, plus some fun and cute furkids! Even a kitty showed up for his picture!

We’d like to give a special thank you to all of the FLASh-ers who came out to help! In attendance, we had Patty Meehan, Joe LaBove, Mary Beth and Michael Boatner, Anna Goodson, Miranda Bolin, Brittany Braud, and Ola Ayers!  Chris and Rhonda Goodland showed up with some more yummy cookies! So thank you! Without you, the event wouldn’t have been a success!

Also, thanks to Andrea Gammons for sponsoring the amazing Christmas cards, which were made by Lowry’s Printing, for the photos.  Thanks to Charley G’s for donating the hot chocolate which came from CC’s Coffehouse on Johnston St.  Another thank you to KLFY anchor Michael Dupre for coming out to help. And lastly, two more HUGE HUGE thank yous to Mike Boatner for donating his time and equipment for taking all of the wonderful photos and thank you to our wonderful Santa Claus, Joe LaBove!!

If you are interested in having Mike come out to take photos of your event, don’t hesitate to contact him at michaelboatner@bellsouth.net

What a fun day! Hope to see you next year! And Merry Christmas!

Enjoy all of the photos below from the event!

Several updates coming your way!

December 9th, 2011

First and foremost, LACC (Lafayette Animal Control Center) is in need of donations of Kuranda beds. The shelter is running short and these beds are great for the dogs (and kitties too).  If you’ve never heard of a Kuranda Bed, head on over to http://kuranda.com/ to find out more about them. These beds are great for shelters because they are easy to clean and sanitize, plus they are chew proof! They are also very comfortable for the animals. Its much nicer to lay on something besides the cold floor!

So, if you wish to donate and keep our doggies toes warm, please click the image below!

Secondly, we have a great Happy Tails story to share! Meet Rex, a wonderful little Shitzu.

Rex was found by one of our wonderful volunteers, Anna Goodson, back in July 2011. He was wondering around Lafayette lost, alone, and terribly matted. Our wonderful leader, Patty Meehan took him in to foster, with the help of Lafayette Animal Aid as the sponsor.  Now Rex has a new home! Just two weeks ago, Patty officially adopted Rex into her home. Below is the latest picture of the cutie with Santa (played by another wonderful volunteer, Joe). These are the kinds of happy tails that we live for everyday! We are slowly making out way to the goal of No More Homeless Pets!

Thank you Patty!

And Lastly, that picture of Santa and Rex lead up to a reminder about Santa Paws!  In case you missed it, Santa and Rex were on KLFY TV 10 on their morning segment, Passe Partout, to promote our Santa Paws event.  Come by the Pavilion at Girard Park from 10am to 2pm this coming up Sunday, December 11th, 2011. You’ll be able to take a picture of your pet and/or children with Santa. The cost is $20. Please bring cash or check!

Your photo will be processed at the event and you will go home with it in a holiday frame. Photography will be done by local photographer, Mike Boatner. Sweet treats will be provided!  This event benefits FLASh.

Feel free to share this flier below with your friends and family!

 See you there!

Call for donations! Food Bank at PetCo in Lafayette

December 3rd, 2011

There is an ongoing Food Bank Donation Drive at the PetCo in Lafayette off of the Louisiana Ave. I-10 exit. Near the entrance of the store, there is a bin where you can leave donations.  All donations of dog food and cat food are welcomed!

Food donations go to families in the Acadiana Area and for seniors who receive food from Meals on Wheels.  Many of these seniors struggle to buy food for their beloved pets, so we give bags of food for them to give to the seniors. Some of these are their regulars and some are just temporarily down on their luck. We recently delivered a bag of Pedigree to a lady, who has a Beagle and two Pitbulls. Her husband has been out of work, but is just waiting to start his new job. These are the types of people we are trying to help!

Please consider donating so we can continue to do this service for our community.

Fun Day at the Park!

November 9th, 2011

Having Fun at Bark in the Park

The weather was perfect and the crowds were huge!  Dogs from all over the Lafayette area took their people to Girard Park to celebrate the annual Bark in the Park, hosted by Lafayette Animal Aid.  The FLASh booth was a popular spot: our Decorate Your Own Dog Bowl activity was a real hit!  Everyone had a great time.  Lots of new friends made.  Lots of visiting with old friends.  And the message was carried loud and clear to interested and supportive attendees – ADOPT!

Take a look at some of the fun we had Sunday HERE.   A huge thank you to Rhonda G for taking such wonderful photos!

Strut your Mutt Updates and more!

October 20th, 2011

Hello animal lovers! We’ve got lots to update you on!

We’d like to thank everyone who came out to our Strut Your Mutt event in September. It was very successful and fun was had by all.  And let’s have a HUGE WELCOME to our newest members!  Over 20 people joined FLASh as paid members, at Strut Your Mutt! Awesome!

Take a look at the wonderful photos of the day HERE.

On October 6th, we held a business meeting to discuss how to best use the SYM funds and other news. We had a terrific turnout and thank you to all who attended!

Please take a look through the summary of the meeting (linked below), and please share any thoughts or ideas you have, on any of the topics.  You can email FLASh (contact@flashlafayette.org), me (cajunbiker@gmail.com), or post on the FLASh Facebook page.

We also have more happy news!!  FLASh has received a $2500 grant that we applied for, from PetCo Foundation! This grant was written specifically to assist folks calling in to the HotLine, which is used to help those in need when situations arise where someone cannot keep a pet, or have found a pet, and for families in a crisis situation who just may need a little help.  The funds are dedicated to helping with spay/neuter costs, vaccination costs, pet food, and temporary boarding.

Just a reminder/information to all members, we do have a yahoo group that is a closed group – just FLASh people – no spammers, etc.  Everyone is invited and encouraged to join it.  It’s a very easy and effective way to communicate amongst each other, in a more ‘private’ setting than Facebook.  This is where we post information about hotline calls, needs for help, just general discussions about things we are working on, etc.

To join, just go to http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/flash-lafayette and click “join this group” in the upper right corner.  Easy at that.

Thank you, and keep checking back for more updates!

Shelby

September 21st, 2011

Meet Shelby, a little dog who was adopted from Lafayette Animal Control about a year ago. Unfortunately, it was not the best fit in a home for Shelby. Soon after her adoption, her adopter contacted a FLASh member for help in rehoming her.

FLASh got working. The adopter was encouraged to please have Shelby spayed and have her vaccinations done (part of the LACC adoption agreement.) Her adopter agreed. A few months passed, with FLASh staying in touch throughout. Eventually, Shelby was spayed, up to date on all her vaccinations, and ready for adoption. FLASh found a foster home for her, and all was in place.

However, Shelby, being the adorable and lively dog she is, had stolen the adopter’s heart, and now she was unsure if she really wanted to let her go.

A few more months passed, when suddenly FLASh received an email from the adopter that things were not going well. They did not have a fenced yard, and Shelby had run out into the street. Her adopter was afraid she was going to get hurt or lost. Yes, that was a very really possibility. Once again, we lines things up with a foster, and made arrangements.

FLASh member Julia Sullivan met with Shelby and her adopter, now about 10 months since the original adoption. The meeting went well, between Shelby and Scooter, Julia’s dog. And so began Shelby’s new adventure.

Scooter, Shelby, and P-Stash

We spread the word that this adorable, happy, loving little dog was looking for a forever home. After living with Julia for over a month, no adopter. Julia could not keep her much longer, due to some prior committments. So FLASh reached out to rescues in the area and across the state. In short order, Terrie Vernado, a rescuer extradinaire, stepped up, sharing that one of the rescues she works with in New Jersey would LOVE to take Shelby. Whoohoo! Kay Gibson, a terrific rescuer in the Denham Springs area, agreed to foster Shelby. Julia and Kay met, and Shelby moved in with Kay.

Last Thursday, Shelby flew, yes flew – with Pilots n-Paws – to New Jersey. She no sooner got off the plane when she was met by a lady who had seen her photos and read her bio on the rescue’s website, and had completely fallen for her. Shelby was adopted that very night.

What a wonderful ending to a bit of a long path for this little girl. And throughout, Shelby never lost her happy spirit, smile, and readiness to play and enjoy life.

Spirit Update!

September 15th, 2011

UPDATE! Spirit has left the building!

The beautiful kitty who has been unbelievably passed over time and time again at Lafayette Animal Control Center is on his way to a bright future. After some networking and lots of emails, we found a rescue for Spirit. Thank you, Bob Beatty in Baton Rouge, and thanks to Dr. Shelly Liles, who sprung Spirit. And to her mom, who gave Spirit a ride to Covington to meet Bob. Teamwork is everything! Yay!!!
