Shelby’s Story

October 22nd, 2011

Meet Shelby, a little dog who was adopted from Lafayette Animal Control about a year ago. Unfortunately, it was not the best fit in a home for Shelby. Soon after her adoption, her adopter contacted a FLASh member for help in rehoming her.

FLASh got working. The adopter was encouraged to please have Shelby spayed and have her vaccinations done (part of the LACC adoption agreement.) Her adopter agreed. A few months passed, with FLASh staying in touch throughout. Eventually, Shelby was spayed, up to date on all her vaccinations, and ready for adoption. FLASh found a foster home for her, and all was in place.

However, Shelby, being the adorable and lively dog she is, had stolen the adopter’s heart, and now she was unsure if she really wanted to let her go.

A few more months passed, when suddenly FLASh received an email from the adopter that things were not going well. They did not have a fenced yard, and Shelby had run out into the street. Her adopter was afraid she was going to get hurt or lost. Yes, that was a very really possibility. Once again, we lines things up with a foster, and made arrangements.

FLASh member Julia Sullivan met with Shelby and her adopter, now about 10 months since the original adoption. The meeting went well, between Shelby and Scooter, Julia’s dog. And so began Shelby’s new adventure.

We spread the word that this adorable, happy, loving little dog was looking for a forever home. After living with Julia for over a month, no adopter. Julia could not keep her much longer, due to some prior committments. So FLASh reached out to rescues in the area and across the state. In short order, Terrie Vernado, a rescuer extraordinaire, stepped up, sharing that one of the rescues she works with in New Jersey would LOVE to take Shelby. Whoohoo! Kay Gibson, a terrific rescuer in the Denham Springs area, agreed to foster Shelby. Julia and Kay met, and Shelby moved in with Kay.

Last Thursday, Shelby flew, yes flew – with Pilots n-Paws – to New Jersey. She no sooner got off the plane when she was met by a lady who had seen her photos and read her bio on the rescue’s website, and had completely fallen for her. Shelby was adopted that very night.

What a wonderful ending to a bit of a long path for this little girl. And throughout, Shelby never lost her happy spirit, smile, and readiness to play and enjoy life.
